PLANNING & PRODUCTION

Week 1

For the first week of the Final Major Project, I am going to produce a mood-board of time-lapses that I found intriguing and which have given me ideas for mine. I am also going to complete research into multiple different time-lapse photographers as inspiration coming from different sources. I am also going to research different techniques that I would find useful for the specific time-lapses that I am thinking of shooting in the coming weeks.

Week 2 - Haysden Shoot

  • Natural lighting
  • Nikon D5300 with 18-105mm VR Nikon lens
  • Tripod
  • Lightroom Classic
  • Photoshop CC
I am planning on shooting this time-lapse on Monday 16th April due to the fact that the weather, with no rain and all round sunshine, this makes it perfect for the shoot that I want to capture.

For the second week of the Final Major Project, I am going to shoot some experimental shoots which will help me to develop ideas and understandings towards my first main shoot. This experimental shoot will help me to improve anything that did not go so well so that I can make the main shoot as successful as possible These experimental shoots will be linked towards my research on Paul Reiffer.

I will also shoot a main shoot for a time-lapse which will hopefully be good enough to put into the final collection of time-lapses. For my main shoot I am planning on venturing to Haysden Country Park by either car or walking as it is about a 15 minute walk from the college campus to capture the flow of the water in the lake and the nature around whilst focusing mainly on the sky changing over time.

Below is the location that I am planning on shooting the first time-lapse.

Week 3 - Haysden Shoot

  • Natural lighting
  • Nikon D5300 with 18-105mm VR Nikon lens
  • Tripod
  • Lightroom Classic
  • Photoshop CC
I am planning on shooting this time-lapse on Monday 30th April due to the fact that the weather is expected to be pleasant but a little on the colder side of things so I am hoping that this will bring more cloud for the shoot.

For the third week of the Final Major Project, I am going to shoot a few more experimental shoots so that I can work out things that would work we'll and what would not for my main shoot this week. These experimental shoots will link towards my research on Rob Whitworth.

I am also going to shoot a main shoot for a time-lapse which I am hoping will be successful enough to include in the final collection of time lapses. my aim is to find a bridge for the foreground with cars that will pass over with the sky in background above so that I not only capture the sky in motion, but I also capture the traffic of cars over the bridge making it more intriguing for the viewers.

Below is a location that I have located which I think is perfect for the second time-lapse.

Week 4 - Crop Field Shoot

  • Natural lighting
  • Nikon D5300 with 18-105mm VR Nikon lens
  • Tripod
  • ND Filter
  • Lightroom Classic
  • Photoshop CC

I am planning on shooting an experimental first time-lapse on the evening of Wednesday 9th May because that day is going to be fairly pleasant and the day after is supposed to be similar which will hopefully result in the sky turning from blue to red as the evening progresses which is also known as 'The Holy Grail'.

I am planning on shooting the main time-lapse on Thursday 10th May because the weather is perfect and there is supposedly going to be a fair amount of strong winds which will mean that the clouds are moving rapidly across the sky. This location is about a 10 minute walk from college.

For the fourth week of the Final Major Project, I am going to shoot multiple experimental shoot based on my own ideas to help me forward think and try out new techniques.

I am also aiming on shooting more than one time-lapse to really push and challenge myself. I would like these to be between 10 - 20 seconds long each. Attempting to capture one of the hardest time-lapses that anyone can capture 'The Holy Grail' and a field full of rustling crops.

Below is the location that I have located which I think is perfect for the third time-lapse.

Week 5 - Torrington Car Park Shoot

  • Natural lighting
  • Nikon D5300 with 18-105mm VR Nikon lens
  • Tripod
  • Lens hood
  • Hot Shoe Spirit Level
  • Lightroom Classic
  • Photoshop CC

I am aiming to shoot two time-lapses which I am going to hopefully shoot in the same spot. These two time-lapses will be captured around 1 minute apart from each other so that the natural lighting stays similar for both of the time-lapses on Sunday 20th May. I am going to shoot on this day because it is the only day of the week that I am able to shoot the time-lapse due to other commitments throughout the week.

The idea behind these two time-lapses is that they will link together when it comes to including these in the final collection of time-lapses. This will be achieved by shooting from the top of a car park looking down towards the roads, streets and train station that is below completely zoomed out so that the clock tower and the sky is also in the frame. However the next time-lapse that I shoot which will be  just seconds after will be an area of the last time-lapse but this time focused and zoomed in on that specific area which will probably be either the roads or the train station.

Below is the location that I have chosen to shoot my fourth and fifth time-lapses.

Week 6 - clock and storm shoot

  • Natural lighting
  • Nikon D5300 with 18-105mm VR Nikon lens
  • Tripod
  • Lightroom Classic
  • Photoshop CC

I am planning to shoot the first time-lapse which will be of a clock face on Tuesday 22nd May. Shooting on this day should be perfect with no rain forecast and minimal clouds should give me some great lighting for this shoot. I know that thunderstorms are forecasted for later in the day in the south east on the Tuesday 22nd May as well so I am going to have to finish the first time-lapse and then hopefully be able to locate a vantage point which there is a good one back on college campus in order to shoot the storm clouds for the second time-lapse.

The concept behind the first time-lapse is that I will capture the hands on the clock face turning over time preferably over the period of an hour or so which will look pretty good if it is successful. The concept behind the second time-lapse is that storm clouds normally move quite rapidly across the sky which would give me some interesting movement of the clouds as they form and also storm clouds are all different shades in contrast to one another so I am hoping that this is successful as well.

Below are the locations that I have chosen to shoot my sixth and seventh time-lapses.

Week 7 - Astrophotography, Crossroads and traffic lights.

  • Natural lighting
  • Nikon D5300 with18-105mm VR Nikon lens
  • Nikon D5100 with 24mm lens
  • Tripod
  • Rotating timer
  • Lightroom Classic
  • Photoshop CC

I am planning on shooting an astrophotography time-lapse. However, this could end up being quite difficult because I need to know when there is going to be a clear night so to do this I need to check how clear the sky is every night at around 11pm to determine if I am able to capture this time-lapse. The next two time-lapses, I am hoping to shoot one after another just as it starts to get dark.

The idea behind the astrophotography time-lapse is that I should capture the movement of the stars as the earth turns and what I am also going to try and do is frame the time-lapse in a flight path so that I capture some trails from planes. The idea behind the other two time-lapses is that the first will capture light trails from cars whilst using the rotating timer. The other one will be a time-lapse of just some traffic lights, showing the continuous change of the lights.

Below are the locations that I have chosen to shoot my eighth, ninth and tenth time-lapses.

Week 8 - Shadows

  • Natural lighting
  • Nikon D5100 with 18-105mm VR Nikon lens
  • Tripod
  • Lightroom Classic
  • Photoshop CC

I am planning on shooting a time-lapse of shadows. In order to do this I need the sun to be out and I know that this week, the weather is supposed to be alright so I need to wait for the perfect evening to shoot this.

the main ideas behind this time-lapse is that the shadows are being cast through the trees as the sun begins to set to show the changing in the movement of the shadows over a period of time. This should be easy because when the sun sets, it descends quite quickly so this should give me a fair amount of motion to capture.

Below is the locations that I have chosen to shoot my eleventh time-lapse.

Week 8 - The Final Piece

This is the last week of the whole Final Major Project so in this week I am going to have to gather all my time-lapses and then put the best ones together in one compilation in Premier Pro where I will perform some small edits in  getting rid of the black bars on the sides of each time-lapse for my final piece. I will also try to add some audio to make it more interesting.

FINAL PIECE PLAN

The plan for my Final Major Project is to gather the best short time-lapses that I have shot over the past eight weeks including experimental and main shoots and compile them into one compilation featuring a chosen piece of music that I think best suits my final piece. I am going to present my work in the college exhibition on a powerful enough computer that can show my final piece titled 'INPERCEIVABLE CHANGES BY THE NAKED EYE' I am going to make sure that the computer monitors are clean so that my final piece can be seen without any imperfections or dirt on the screen.

PRACTICALS SKILLS

Time-lapse 1 (Week 2) This time-lapse was shot with a shutter speed of 1/500's at f11 with the ISO at 100.  I left the camera shooting at an interval of 3 seconds for about 40 minutes with 751 images having been shot. I imported all the images into Lightroom classic cc and used the sync button in order to allow for all changes that I make to one image, to be applied to all the images that Imported into the catalog. I started editing all the images by, increasing the contrast to +22 to really make the clouds stand out. I then decreased the shadows to -65 to lighten the areas of the images that had too much shadow. I increased the whites slightly to +33 which brightened parts of the images. I lowered the blacks to -13 in order to lighten some areas which I thought were too dark. Upping the clarity to +31, made the smaller details within the images, really pop. increasing the vibrance to +33 made the colours more eye catching. I then upped the saturation to +54. After t...

PROBLEM SOLVING

My own experimental shoots (DSLR & Mobile) DSLR: Holy Grail This time-lapse was shot with a shutter speed of 1/400's at f7.1 with the ISO at 400. I left the camera shooting at an interval of 3 seconds for about 40 minutes with 468 images having been shot. I imported all the images into Lightroom classic cc and used the sync button in order to allow for all changes that I make to one image, to be applied to all the images that Imported into the catalog. I started editing all of the images by increasing the c ontrast to +44 which increased the contrast between the blue sky and the different clouds that can be seen.  I then upped the s hadows to +75. This brightened the trees in the foreground so you can see the details a lot more clearly such as the flowers and leaves on the trees. Next, I increased the c larity to +15. This made the smaller details in the sky and the foreground really pop and stand out. I then used the d ehaze tool which I se to +2 which really showe...
